"The Encyclopaedia of Antique
Roses" Volume II

Bob & Kathy Edberg of
Limberlost Roses are putting to together a series
of volumes which in essence reproduce the hand drawn
plates plus text in the original French with English
translation, from the Journal des Roses” originally
published from January, 1883, through December, 1888
I own the first volume and
it sits in the drawer of my bedside table so I can browse
through it each night with my cup of tea. The quality of the plates,
the printing, the paper and the binding make this a true
treasure. The second volume is out soon and I
advise you order now, because they will sell out
quickly.

Some Books We Own and Like
Below are just a few books
we like and recommend. They range from great books for
the beginner to rose books for collectors.

CLASSIC ROSES by Peter
Beales. Revised and enlarged edition 1997
Peter literally wrote the
book on roses as far as I'm concerned. This is a
must have for anyone who grows and collects roses.
Hundreds of photos and Peter's wonderful text.

THE GRAHAM STUART THOMAS
ROSE BOOK by Graham Stuart Thomas. An omnibus of
the three landmark books published by Mr. Thomas in the
'60's. A terrific book for garnering an overview
of roses, rose history and rose classes.

THE OLD ROSE ADVISOR VOLUME
II by Brent Dickerson. This along with Volume I,
The Old Rose Adventurer and others is a collection of
work by Brent Dickerson. If you love old roses and
wish to do some serious research on them these are great
books.

100 ROSES ENGLISH ROSES FOR
THE AMERICAN GARDEN & 100 OLD ROSES FOR THE AMERICAN
GARDEN by Clair Martin. Clair is curator of Roses
at the Huntington Botanical Garden in Pasadena
California. He is also an good friend and knows
his roses. Wonderful photos and some great
practical tips on growing these roses from a man not
afraid to get his hands dirty.

DAVID AUSTIN'S ENGLISH ROSES
by David Austin. From the Gentleman who created
English Roses comes the definitive book on English
Roses. This is just one of David's many wonderful
books. The photography is stunning.

THE ROSE - AN ILLUSTRATED
HISTORY by Peter Harkness. Wonderful reproductions
of colour plates and information about a whole range of
roses.

THE RANDOM HOUSE BOOK OF
ROSES by Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix. This is
just one of a whole series of books on roses and plants
in general by these two gentleman. They are both
wonderful photographers and each rose (and there are
thousands) is accompanied by a photo. Roger
Phillips is the person behind the wonderful website
Roger's Roses.

CLIMBING ROSES OF THE WORLD
by Charles Quest Riston. I've only seen this book
briefly but it is impressive as is its Author.
Charles is fluent in a great many languages and his
ability to research roses as written about in their
native tongue shows. Great photos and information
written by a Gentleman who knows and loves his roses. |
