The first time I
saw The David Austin Nursery and Gardens was in 1998. It was during a
conference being held by the International Heritage Rose Foundation.
The conference that year
was in Cambridge, England and one of the day trips was a bus tour to the
Nursery. How could I resist!I'd been growing
David Austin
Roses for several years and owned a company that took care of rose gardens, and
particularly Old Roses, Shrub Roses and David Austin Roses back in Los Angeles,
California.We arrived at the
Nursery during one of those periods of intense rain that only
seems to occur in England when one is traveling there. But the folks who
ran the Nursery and Mr. Austin himself greeted us with hot tea and most of all
bed after bed of beautiful roses. We saw the greenhouses, the trial area,
the retail area and the garden that day, and even with the inclement weather it
was beautiful. The entire nursery is must visit for any rose lover but the
garden is particularly memorable. It is divided into
areas. One section features the old roses and ramblers. There is
a long pergola covering
a path and you walk under dozens and dozens of great ramblers and climbers.
Another area features an excellent collection of species roses. But to no
surprise the most beautiful area features the work of Mr. Austin himself.David Austin Roses
are best grown in the general landscape with other plants or massed in beds.
The garden shows both
well. The mass plantings can take your breath away and the inter-planting
will ignite ideas for your own garden at home.Besides the garden
there is a terrific retail area, gift shop and a good cafe for a bite to eat or
a hot cup of tea. If you find yourself in this part of England stop in for
a visit. You won't be disappointed. We expect our full
line of some 50 David Austin Roses® to start being available in
the Fall of 2006. In keeping with Ashdown Rose's efforts to provide the best
quality plants available, we are importing all our original plant material
directly from the David Austin Nursery in England. We will propagate our entire
line of David Austin Roses® from those plants.Click Here to see our page containing a
