Westbroekpark is on the
outskirts of the Den Haag (The Hague) in The
Netherlands. Easily accessible by street car,
taxi or major roads it is always a garden worth
visiting
- particularly in early July
when The Hague International Rose Trials are staged.
I was luck enough to be
asked to be a judge at this event and the quality of
the roses is topnotch.
My background is Dutch
so maybe I prejudiced, but this country has a way
with gardens.Always immaculate,
always beautifully organized and always at its best,
Westbroekpark is a organized in beds of mass
planted individual varieties of roses. It's a
wonderful way to see how roses do when planted out
this way.Once
more each bed is clearly labeled with the rose in
it, and information such as the hybridizer and the
year of introduction are also included.
With
the trials taking place on a yearly basis the beds
are rotated regularly so repeat visits are a must.
The rose garden is best
entered from behind the restaurant located at the
end of the drive from the entrance. There you
can have a coffee, a snack or even a full meal.
In addition to the Rose
Garden the park also contains many other activities,
with quite a few oriented towards young children.
At various times during
the year they have Theater and Art festivals as
well.
All of these additional activities make
it easy to visit the Rose Garden if you happen to be traveling with folks who might not be as crazy about
roses as you are.
So if you find yourself
in Holland on vacation take a side trip to
Westbroekpark. It's a great stop for any rose
lover.
